Het verhaal

It is a difficult time in the Netherlands, there is a lot of unrest in society. General Martinus promises to put an end to the chaos and make the country great again. Behind the scenes he works together with his followers: The Order of the New Order, also known as ONO. When a message comes out that many people in parliament cannot be trusted, Martinus seizes his opportunity. With the help of the army he manages to take power over the Netherlands. To the Dutch people he presents himself as the great savior.

General Martinus immediately introduces strict rules to maintain his power, such as curfews and street patrols. The media are also censored and people who are against Martinus disappear. The lives of the six scouts - Lisa, Arjen, Layla, Michael, Diede and Ismael - also changed drastically. When they come together, they decide that they can no longer stand by and watch. Together they want to make a difference. They know it is going to be difficult, but they have hope. What choices would you make in their shoes?

Preparation

Make sure there is a game leader for each group. The game leader does not play along themselves, but guides the discussions and explains the assignments.

The game leader reads the dilemmas and assignments in advance and prepares all materials for the game and the assignments.

All text printed in italics in the download Game Explanation together with this symbol is extra information for the game leader and does not need to be read aloud.

Per group is needed:
1 game explanation for the game leader
9 dilemma cards of 1 color (of which 1 starting card)
6 character cards of 1 color
3 appendices

For the whole group:
1 shared starting tile

Introduction film

As preparation you watch the introduction film together with the whole group. If this is not possible, you read the story together. There is a separate download of the story, which can be found in the game materials.

Forming groups and distributing characters:

You divide yourselves into a group of minimum 4 and maximum 6 players. Each player receives a character card whereby Lisa, Michael, Layla and Ismael are distributed in any case. After everyone has thoroughly reviewed their card, you tell your group who you are and what your background is.

TIP

If players have difficulty empathizing with a character, you can think in advance about which character card you give to which player.

Playing the game:

You play 6 rounds, each of which has the following structure:

  • Watch the film about the dilemma and pick up the correct dilemma card.
  • Read out the choices with the pros and cons.
  • Discuss with your group
    • What choice would your character make?
    • Each discussion takes approximately 5 minutes Place the dilemma card in the spot that matches your choice next to the previous dilemma card (with dilemma 1 you first place the starting card next to the shared starting tile). If the choice you make requires handing in or destroying something, hand this in to the game leader.
  • Carry out the assignment that belongs to the choice of the dilemma.

TIP

The game leader helps to place the dilemma cards further apart. The game leader ensures that the discussions are conducted properly (respectfully), that everyone gets a turn and can intervene if necessary.

Debriefing & Conclusion:

After playing the game you watch the closing film. It is important to discuss and wrap up the game afterwards. Reflect on the effect of the choices you have made. This can be done by asking yourselves the following questions (or the game leader does this).

  • What did you think of the game?
  • What was it like to notice that earlier choices had an effect on the course of the game?
  • What was it like to empathize with a character?
  • What did playing the game do to you?
    • Did it touch you?
    • Did you find it confronting?
    • Did you feel worried?
  • What do you need to wrap up the game for yourself? After this you can talk about the fact that this game recreated what could really happen in a war.

The choices you faced were also the dilemmas that young people faced back then. They sometimes made choices whose consequences they could not always foresee.

TIP

Let the players read for themselves the story of the six real scouts on which this game is based.
